SIS - Sedikit Latarbelakang

Sisters in Islam (SIS) is an organization of Muslim women in Malaysia which seeks to articulate women's rights in Islam by emphasising the need to interpret the Qur'an and the hadith in their proper historical and cultural contexts.

It also advocates for the right of women to hold public office. One of the more prominent leaders of SIS is Zainah Anwar who was the head for two decades. In 1987, a clutch of women lawyers, activists, academics and journalists including Zainah Anwar jointly founded a fledgling movement to look into the problems Muslim women had with the Syariah courts. In 1990, the movement formally became known as SIS. Its focus was to challenge laws and policy made in the name of Islam that discriminate against women. Eventually, SIS areas of work expanded to emcompass larger issues of democracy, human rights and constitutionalism.

Zainah was involved with Sisters in Islam for two decades as its leader. She was responsible for building the NGO from a small organisation to a global one and is invited to give talks all over the world. Said Zainah in an interview with The Star:

It’s as if in Islam, women don’t have any rights at all. One woman asked, if the house were on fire, would she then have to seek her husband’s permission to flee! Women cannot even use their common sense to save their (own) lives. This cannot be Islam. God is just. Islam is just.

Assalamualaikum, Zainah may be the founder of Sisters in Islam. She might be renowned women-lib. But, she has to be careful of what seh said about Islam. At one time she said that the right to religion is a freedom for all to choose.Islam does not prohibits man (i.e including women) to profess whatever relgion she might think befit her desire and worldviews. This is antitical to Islam. Man has the choice yes - the choice to go to heaven or hell. If you are not a Muslim for certain you'll go to hell, since Allah (a.w) says that whatever good deeds by the person in this world, he or she will not be rewardsed any pahala, and in the days of judgement he or she will be in hell! Is that a choice? SIS promotes the idea of freedom of choice as far as religion is concerned. In Islam women are not equal in some things but not totally inferior to men. After all ifshe is a true Muslim she knows or ought to know that the first woman was created out of man! Is she espousing a women to have the right to be an Imam of a solat, just like Fatimah Wadood, who lead a congregation fo prayer in US sometime back? She may be wellknown but she may be also anti Islam in many of things espoused by SIS! May Allah gives he the hidayah which is vital for Muslim to floow the 'siratul mustaqim' and Allah's blessing. Amin
